- Circlers engaged in the game of Nim with guest facilitator Steve Pelikan from the Cincinnati MTC. Thanks, Steve, for sharing this fun game with us and leading us to an abstract representation of the strategies!

January 11, 2014, 9AM-12PM, Holiday Inn, Athens.
- Focus on Counting
Counting is arguably one of the earliest concepts we learn in mathematics. From counting comes the answers to “How many?” and “How much?” and even “When?” But counting is a subject so deep that research mathematicians, called “combinatorists” study unsolved questions in counting.
We used simple questions in counting to motivate deep and stimulating thinking about patterns, properties, and processes. We also further explored ways to support the Standards for Mathematical Practice and recipients received some primo swag!
March 15, 2014, 12PM-3PM, Athens Community Center
- Download the AGENDA below if needed for LPDC credit.
- Pi Day Celebration, starting with pizza pie for lunch! UPDATE>>> Dr. Diana White, of University Colorado-Denver will likely facilitate! She was the principal investigator for the "Learning Mathematics for Teaching" (LMT) that Summer Immersion participants took (pre and post). Our group seemed to have the MOST significant gains (p<.001) of any of the groups studied!
- Did you know that some people have memorized as many as 67,000 digits of Pi? Don't worry, we won't go past 10. But do join us as we investigate the history, approximations, geometry, and number theory of the contstant Pi.
- Diana White is a mathematician and mathematics educator at the University of Colorado Denver who specializes in teacher preparation and teacher professional development. She is the founding director of the Rocky Mountain Math Teachers' Circle, conducts research on the national Math Teachers' Circle Program, and loves to travel to other Math Teachers' Circle across the country to lead sessions.
May 10, 2014, 9:30 am-noon, The Plains Library
- The last meeting of the 2013-2014 year had Circlers exploring the fascinating mathematical field of topology. Laundry math, pencil/string puzzles, and a bit of rope twisting made for excellent fun thinking about objects in space and their properties.
